An estimated 5.4 million Americans are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease today. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder that destroys cells in the brain. It is the leading cause of dementia, a condition that involves gradual memory loss, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills, impairment of judgment, and personality changes. As the disease progresses, people with Alzheimer’s become unable to care for themselves. If you are caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease, you are not alone. An estimated 15,000,000 Americans are caregivers to those suffering from this disorder. There are many resources available to help you better understand your loved ones condition, teach you how to handle the disease more efficiently, and provide support to the caregiver.
